Life was difficult for Jewish families during WWII, and they often found themselves in need of miracles to protect their loved ones from the Nazis. While Ilona’s father was serving in the military, her mother struggled to keep their business afloat. Tragically, Ilona’s grandparents were deported to the concentration camps. Little Ilona had received a doll from her aunt, which she called Bábu, the Hungarian word for doll. She often shared her candy with Bábu by removing the doll’s head and placing the treats inside. This candy became part of a miracle that helped keep her mother and her alive during the war. Young author Joelle LaPlante did an outstanding job bringing this story to life.
